BAG Seminar and Evening Reception- 29 September 2021 *Register now*

We are delighted to announce a LIVE BAG Seminar & Evening Reception on Wednesday 29 September 2021 at The Brewery, London. [This is the date reserved for what would traditionally be the BAG Annual Dinner].

The event will provide an ideal opportunity to come together as the aviation community, for the first time since the start of the pandemic, to network with leading airport clients, representatives of UK Government and colleagues from across the UK supply chain.
As restrictions lift and industry begins to recover, we wanted our first in-person event of the year to be as inclusive as possible providing an opportunity for networking to take place between members, their guests and other organisations active in the sector in a safe and relaxed manner.

The networking event incorporates our traditional Summer Seminar, postponed from late June, as a late afternoon session preceding the evening reception. The seminar is themed around “Innovation in Aviation” and will be in the form of a conference style session of about ninety minutes on key topics affecting the UK and international aviation industry. Our confirmed speakers already include Heathrow Airport and futurist Rohit Talwar.

Following the seminar there will be a reception with canapés, bowl food and free-flowing drinks throughout the evening, providing ample opportunity for networking.

BAG Board Elections 2021 - Call for Nominations
We are approaching the time for Elections to the Board of the British Aviation Group, and would like to invite nominations for candidates from across the membership. The BAG Board sets the strategy and works with the BAG Secretariat to drive BAG activities forward, ensuring that BAG represents and serves the requirements of its members. Participation on the Board offers a unique opportunity to help promote the interests of the membership and wider supply chain – whilst providing tremendous scope for professional and personal development.

DIT UK-Kuwait Aviation Webinar- 4 August 2021

The UK Department for International Trade in partnership with Directorate General for Civil Aviation of Kuwait would like to invite you to attend the UK-Kuwait Aviation webinar.
Kuwait Airport Expansion is a large scale, long-term development programme, with a wide range of packages across airport infrastructure, buildings and systems. A number of UK companies have already successfully contributed for the project and there is scope for further involvement in both current and upcoming opportunities. In this event, we will deliver an overview of the wider airport master plan, and highlight the new developments across the project. For more information and how to register please click here.
BAG Virtual Get Together: UK Trade Policy and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) in Aviation with the Department for International Trade (DIT)- 12 August 2021

As part of BAG’s membership of the Department for International Trade’s (DIT’s) Transport Services Trade Advisory Group BAG is coordinating with DIT a virtual session on UK Trade Policy and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and its impact to the aviation sector. The Trade Advisory Groups (TAGs) were established in July 2019 to meet the requirements of the Department for International Trade’s (DIT) trade negotiations with the principal purpose to provide the blend of strategic and technical expertise required to ensure the United Kingdom’s trade negotiations are able to progress at pace.

Henrik Jonstromer, Head of Transport and Delivery Services and other DIT policy colleagues will be joining us to provide insight to BAG members on

  • The role and objectives of Trade Policy
  • Structure and content of Free Trade Agreements
  • Key threads within Free Trade Agreements such as services, free movement of goods, customs and procurement
  • The structures used to engage with Government around FTAs

The session will be facilitated by Shakir Khaja, BAG Board members and BAG’s appointed representative on the Transport Service Trade Advisory Group, who will share with members BAG’s level of commitment and what BAG has been doing so far in terms of engagement. DfT Net Zero Consultation: Call for BAG Members Views / Insights for consideration
The Department for Transport published on 14 July an open consultation on Jet zero: our strategy for net zero aviation. This sets out Government’s proposed approach and principles to reach net zero aviation by 2050. It is Government’s ambition to

  • decarbonise aviation in a way that preserves the benefits of air travel
  • maximise the opportunities that decarbonisation can bring

The consultation will inform the final jet zero strategy.
BAG is looking how to respond to this consultation as a trade body and establishing which areas we are best placed to respond, therefore the BAG Board’s Sustainability Working Group will meet early next week to discuss this in further detail. We would welcome views from across the membership, including comments and insights form organisations who are making their own responses to this consultation. Please feed into BAG any elements you would like us to consider / make us aware of in preparing our response.
Please submit any initial thoughts by 30th July and any additional feedback and material (e.g. copies of your own responses) by 20th August 2021 to Bettina Rigg allow us time to incorporate where possible into our final response.

Update on the work of The Future of Aviation Group

The Future of Aviation Group was set up to campaign for support for the aviation, travel, and tourism industries, some of the sectors hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. As domestic restrictions are being lifted, international travel remains heavily restricted and recovery for the aviation, travel and tourism sectors appears to still be some way off.
Over the past few months, The Future of Aviation Group has continued its parliamentary engagement to lobby the Government for the safe reopening of international travel and sufficient financial support if restrictions continue. This includes two parliamentary debates in June dedicated to support for the aviation, travel and tourism industries and a virtual meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Future of Aviation on 6th July focusing on the reopening of the aviation sector.
On 10th June, MPs including All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Future of Aviation Chair Henry Smith MP, former Prime Minister Theresa May MP, former Secretary of State for Transport Chris Grayling MP and Transport Select Committee Chair Huw Merriman MP joined a debate on Support for the Aviation, Travel and Tourism Industries. Throughout the debate, which took place in the House of Commons, MPs from across the House called for a risk-based approach to reopening international travel and highlighted the limitations of the Government’s approach to the traffic light system, mandatory testing, and quarantine guidelines. MPs also called on the Government to introduce the targeted support the aviation, travel, and tourism sectors need as their ability to operate continues to be restricted.
On 24th June, Chair of the APPG for the Future of Aviation Henry Smith MP led a Westminster Hall debate on Support for the Aviation, Tourism and Travel Industries in Response to COVID-19. Once again, MPs from across the house came together to call on the Government to drop their overcautious, risk-adverse approach to reopening travel and take a more pragmatic, risk-based approach that balances public health concerns with the needs of industry and the need to reopen travel for the benefit of the economy and the individuals who rely on international travel not just for income but for family and personal connections.
On 6th July, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Future of Aviation held a virtual meeting providing Parliamentarians with an update on the reopening of the aviation industry and an outline of what the sector needs next. A good number of MPs and Peers from all Parties joined the meeting to hear presentations from Manchester Airports Group, easyJet and Virgin Atlantic. Parliamentarians heard how damaging the pandemic and related restrictions have been to the aviation industry, how the UK is comparing to counterparts in Europe and the US and how the Government can help the sector to recover. Topics of discussion focused largely on the need to increase the green list, reduce the costs of PCR testing and the burden of quarantine for amber list countries.

Request for BAG Member Case Studies for Future of Aviation Group to highlight the impact of COVID-19 on UK aviation industry and supply chain
Through BAG’s membership of the Future of Aviation Group, we are looking for dedicated BAG Member case studies / stories that highlight the impact of COVID-19 on the UK aviation industry and supply chain (particularly the significant fiscal impact of the COVID-19 crisis, impact of not being able to travel internationally for business and therefore losing out to other international competitors, etc.). By providing us with these significant examples, the Future of Aviation Group is aiming to broaden understanding amongst MPs of the key issues facing BAG members, potential risk to jobs and businesses and how MPs can help to put pressure on the Government in order to deliver support for the industry.  Please connect with / send your case studies to Bettina Rigg at BAG Secretariat so we can share them with the Future of Aviation Group accordingly.
