Sustainable Aviation is a long term strategy which sets out the collective approach of UK aviation to tackling the challenge of ensuring a cleaner, quieter, smarter future for our industry. Several years ago, all parts of the aviation sector came together to produce a long term strategy setting out the collective approach of UK aviation to tackle the challenge of ensuring a sustainable future for our industry. The group arising from this initiative is called Sustainable Aviation, and brings together the main players from UK airlines, airports, manufacturers and air navigation service providers. BAG is a full member of Sustainable Aviation and participates in all Working Groups regularly. Read more
The BAG Board – when required – operates a Policy Group (as part of our Strategy Working Group) which addresses the need for a common voice that requires development of positioning with government and other industry bodies. This is in close alignment with the overall strategic direction for BAG but benefits from wider thinking. Responses include: The Department for Business and Trade is developing a Trade Strategy, which is aimed at achieving long-term sustainable, inclusive, and resilient growth through trade, supported by rigorous economic and geopolitical analysis. In January 2025 BAG provided input into this new Strategy addressing key question such as How to facilitate trade for businesses and provide practical tools to support them? How to build the right partnerships internationally through trade mechanisms? And How the UK should operate in the international context to support and protect businesses. The UK aviation industry has rightly been recognised as vital to the Government’s growth agenda. In 2023, the total generated direct and indirect UK airport activity generated £27.1 billion of GVA and over 270,000 jobs – all while pursuing Net Zero and the sustainability agenda.

New runway capacity – together with the modernised airspace required to support them – is front and centre of that growth agenda to accommodate future demand for air travel. It is almost 25 years since the last full-length runway was built in the UK, and more than 70 years since a full-length runway was built in the South East. In 2023, UK passenger numbers were at 93% of their pre-pandemic totals, and most UK airports expect to exceed 2019 levels from 2025 onwards. Increasing UK airport capacity is long overdue.
