Athens International Airport (AIA) is the largest airport in Greece, located 35 kilometres from the city centre and linking the country’s capital with domestic mainland and island destinations. AIA was originally designed and constructed by Hochtief and completed in 2001 in preparation for the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics.

In 2024, in order to address the long-term demand associated with the growth of air traffic, AIA launched the Airport Expansion Program (AEP), the largest project in its history. An international tender was launched for the expansion project, which takes into account the airport’s current architectural context and proposes extensions and alterations to the main terminal building (MTB) and satellite terminal building (STB). The scope also includes updates to landside and airside areas, aircraft stands, gate seating areas and commercial spaces.

The project, led by Grimshaw, Haptic, K-Studio with Arup, Leslie Jones, Triagonal and Plan A, aims to deliver an outstanding travel experience through elevated aesthetics and effective performance...
