With the temperature hitting a record-shattering 115 degrees Monday at Portland International Airport, many might be wondering: Is it too hot for airplanes to take off?

For the most part, the answer appears to be no. The airport is still a few degrees shy of the threshold where the air density becomes low enough to start hindering the ability to easily gain lift at takeoff.

Based on experiences at other scorching hot transportation hubs, the mercury might have to reach at least 118 degrees before it starts raising alarms.
