In a new suite of aviation sanctions announced on Wednesday, the British government now has newly-granted authorities to detain any Russian aircraft present in the country.
In response to President Vladimir Putin ordering a military offensive invasion against Ukraine, the British government had previously imposed an overflight and landing ban on Russian aircraft. With the new sanctions, however, it is now a criminal offense for any Russian aircraft to breach that ban.
The ban includes any aircraft owned, operated or even chartered by anyone with any connections to Russia or to designated individuals or entities.
Additionally, the ban gives the British government the power to detain any of such aircraft within the country, as well as remove any of such aircraft belonging to designated Russian individuals and entities from the United Kingdom aircraft register.
