Gatwick Airport Limited (GAL) has awarded a new contract to Siemens Postal, Parcel and Airport Logistics (SPPAL) UK to design and build a simulation model of the baggage handling system operating at Gatwick’s North Terminal. Completed in March 2015, the simulation shows how the proposed change to hold baggage screening in line with ECAC (European Civil Aviation Conference) Standard 3 will affect the current baggage handling system as a whole.

‘The Siemens team carried out complex modelling and testing of multiple detailed scenarios across several control areas in the existing baggage handling and hold baggage screening systems, said Thomas Bayer, Managing Director of Siemens Postal Parcel and Airport Logistics UK.  The simulation work resulted in a series of reports, presentations and workshops so that GAL can assess the future compatibility of Standard 3 EDS (Explosive Detection System) machine configurations in the North Terminal. The resulting information allows GAL to make an informed decision on how to increase the security and efficiency of operations for the benefit of both the airlines and passengers.

On GAL’s behalf, Senior Engineering Manager Matt Payne said: ‘System simulation is an essential part of the design process for Gatwick’s baggage handling facility. It’s a highly effective way for the teams to identify system characteristics and performance. Helping to provide essential data and information without disrupting day-to-day business is a critical requirement to ensure stable operations for our airport stakeholders and passengers.”

In 2013, Siemens completed extensive installation work on new baggage handling equipment and facilities at the Gatwick North Terminal. The contract to install a range of baggage screening and sorting equipment for both arrivals and departures at Gatwick included the supply and commissioning of mechanical control equipment to operate baggage conveyors with a total length of 2,500 metres, five new hold baggage screening lines, and new baggage reclaim carousels for international arrivals.
