The sampling will target international flights arriving at San Francisco International Airport.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has become the first airport in the US to launch a regular program in collaboration with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to test aircraft wastewater for traces of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. The aim of the scheme is to detect emerging COVID-19 variants in a timely and controlled manner.

An automatic device has been installed that will regularly collect wastewater samples from a variety of international flights arriving at the airport. San Francisco International Airport is a major international hub for United Airlines, with flights arriving from Europe, Asia, and Australasia on a daily basis. The samples will then be sent to a laboratory for further testing.
