The UK’s Department for Transport (DfT) has opened a consultation on its airport slot allocation system for the first time in almost 30 years in a bid to reform the country’s aviation industry.

The proposed changes would require airlines to use slots instead of storing or leasing them, with unused slots reallocated to competitors to improve efficiency.

According to the government, the changes aim to empower the UK aviation industry and lower costs, moving away from the European Union's standardized allocation system.
