On 21 April 2022, the National Audit Office (NAO) published a report into the Government’s management of the border during the pandemic, focusing on governance and value for money. The report makes for interesting reading, detailing the many policy changes and how government never really defined what the travel restrictions were supposed to achieve. It concluded that the NAO could not judge whether the system delivered value for money because of this absence of measurable outcomes. It makes a series of recommendations, urging government to use the absence of restrictions to put better systems in place to ensure any future measures, if needed, are better considered within government.
