The reason two major Australian airports had to be evacuated on the same day has been revealed.

Two major airports were thrown into chaos on Tuesday morning after they were shut down by separate and unrelated security breaches.

Confused passengers at Adelaide and Melbourne airports were forced to hastily evacuate their respective terminals following issues at security.

Passengers at Adelaide Airport were told to exit the main terminal just after 10am when it was discovered a walk-through security detector had failed.

According to a Qantas spokesperson, the [Melbourne Airport] breach was caused by a passenger who travelled from Perth to Melbourne for a connecting flight to Sydney.

Instead of proceeding directly to his connecting flight once he arrived in Melbourne, he left the sterile area of the terminal and made his way towards the baggage carousel.
