Heathrow was able to report a 90% year-on-year increase in passengers in December 2022, having handled a total of 5.9 million that month. This made it LHR's busiest festive period since 2019, with the airport reporting that transatlantic travel, which would have been minimal last time around, played a key role.

Indeed, routes between Heathrow and North America saw 1.45 million passengers last month, making this its second-busiest market behind European Union destinations (1.85 million). The importance of the transatlantic market was underlined by the fact that New York JFK has become LHR's busiest route again.
