Wintry conditions are causing chaos for airlines and airports.

A severe winter storm that is sweeping across large parts of the United States is causing chaos for airports in many locations. In total, flight cancellations have exceeded 5,000 for flights within, into, or out of the United States.

According to Flight Aware, the worst-hit airport is Dallas-Fort Worth, which has seen 70% of its originating flights canceled, a total of 680. Flights destined to arrive at DFW have been canceled too, 634 in total, or 65% of the scheduled services. DFW had closed for a short period this morning, but managed to reopen one runway just after midday, but with a warning:
