Construction Briefing - Mike Hayes

Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci Airport has unveiled plans for the construction a new international terminal.

The proposed expansion plans, presented by the US-based Rafael Viñoly Architects, include a new 50,000m2 terminal, complete with a unique 77,000m2 rooftop vineyard...managed and harvested by a prominent Tuscan vintner, with the winemaking process taking place in cellars situated directly beneath the terminal’s roof.

A significant aspect of the project involves lengthening and reorienting the current airport runway by 90 degrees, to prevent the nearby hills inhibiting the operational capacity of modern aircraft.

The proposed development is slated to be undertaken in two phases, with the first phase expected to be completed in 2026. The second phase is scheduled for completion in 2035.
