The 3D images produced by the new scanners will allow passengers to leave liquids and large electronics in their carry-on baggage as they pass through security
Phase one of a £100m investment programme at the airport is currently underway, with the construction of a new security building adjacent to the current terminal building.
The new building will be operational by Summer 2024 when passengers will start to use the facility.
This "ultra-modern £25m facility will transform the passenger security experience by implementing the required Next Generation Security screening equipment meaning passengers will no longer have to remove liquids or electronics from their luggage", an airport spokesperson previously said.
Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and security screening technologies, has announced it is supplying the airport with the "industry-leading HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX carry-on baggage X-ray scanners and the iLane A20SC ATRS, the smart automatic tray return system".
