Airport Operator
- Autumn 2021 Edition -

The Autumn 2021 Edition of the Airport Operator is out now! Packed with industry-leading insights into the UK airports, this is the magazine you don't want to miss.

On the road to recovery

Following a disappointing summer, AOA Chair Ruby McGregor-Smith writes about the importance of aviation for the UK and the need to work with the UK and devolved governments to boost our sector's recovery. Nick Barton, Vice Chair of the AOA and CEO of Birmingham Airport, looks back at how the AOA Board sought to help members through the pandemic.

To give you a sense of how the recovery is looking so far, the Airport Operator spoke to CEOs responsible for Birmingham, Bristol, London City and Newcastle airports. They give an overview of how things are looking from their perspective. Heathrow's Chief People Officer, Paula Stannett, discusses the recruitment challenges and opportunities, including how they use the government-sponsored Aviation Skills Retention Platform.

Sustainability central to the recovery

The airport CEOs interviewed for this edition all agree on the importance of recovering our lost connectivity and passengers in a sustainable way. Bristol CEO Dave Lees and Newcastle CEO Nick Jones outline how their recent sustainability strategies will achieve that in their airports. The Airport Operator also looks at the AOA's Decarbonisation Report, which was published on Tuesday with figures showing that airports have halved the emissions they control (known as Scope 1 and 2) between 2010 and 2019.

Technology is transforming airport operations

The AOA's newest Corporate Partner Intel and our long-standing Corporate Partner Thales both take a look at the transformative role technology can play in airports, particularly as we come out of the pandemic. Intel focuses on smart airports, while Thales highlights the role of biometrics but also the challenge of drones.

AOA member ICTS also features, looking at their work in airport security operations, and finally our newest Gold member, D-Fend Solutions, highlights their counter-drone solutions.
