Winter storms are battering the United States again today [15 Jan 2024], and by 20:30 Eastern Time, more than 3,000 flights had already been canceled. Texas airports like Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport have been some of the most affected, with Denver, Chicago, Washington, and others suffering disruptions.

Texas is not usually the first state that comes to mind when talking about brutal winters, but this year, the Lone Star State is being hit hard with storms, heavily disrupting airport operations. Today, temperatures were below freezing in Houston, and, to add to the cold, it was raining. Because of freezing rain, the Federal Aviation Administration ordered a ground stop from 10:45 to 12:30, and United asked the ground stop to be extended an hour. Now, the ground stop has been extended to 19:00.
