Zaha Hadid Architects and Pascall+Watson Architects have been chosen as part of the consortium to design the $6 billion first phase of a new airport in Ethiopa, which is set to become Africa’s largest

The two UK-based practices are working with multidisciplinary giant Dar Al-Handasah on the massive project at Abusera, south of the capital, Addis Ababa. The team includes aviation consultants Landrum & Brown and engineers TY Lin.

The airport at the crossroads of Africa, Asia and the Middle East will initially serve 60 million passengers each year before expanding to 110 million passengers annually once the later phases are completed.

Occupying a 35km² site, the project will deliver 600,000m² of passenger facilities, 126,000m² of airline support facilities, two parallel runways and more than 100,000m² of cargo and other support buildings.
