Airports are crucial for connectivity and trade, having an important contribution to national economies. As extreme weather events are becoming more intense, some airports face operational challenges, as they have not been designed to withstand such conditions.
The vulnerability of some airports’ infrastructure to climate change led the World Economic Forum to publish the Five Steps to Climate Resilience in Airports paper in August. The five steps outlined in this paper devised by AtkinsRéalis are: build resilience into new designs; retrofit resilience into existing assets; harness the power of data and technology; prepare for the first 48 hours; and integrate climate resilience into long-term planning.
