IATA's efforts contribute to the overall stability and growth of the aviation industry.
Slots refer to the specific takeoff and landing times granted to airlines at congested airports. As air traffic continues to grow, efficient and equitable slot allocation becomes crucial in ensuring smooth operations and fair competition among airlines.
Annually, more than 1.5 billion passengers, accounting for 43% of global air traffic, embark on their journey from over 200 airports that require slot coordination. The anticipated increase in slot-coordinated airports is a direct result of insufficient expansion in airport infrastructure to accommodate the rising demand.
The association has developed globally recognized guidelines and standards that aim to ensure transparency, non-discrimination, and efficiency in slot allocation procedures. These guidelines, known as the Worldwide Airport Slot Guidelines (WASG) – sometimes referred to as the Worldwide Slot Guidelines (WSG) – provide a framework for the allocation and management of slots at congested airports around the globe.
