Airports are increasingly mindful of embodied carbon when building new terminals. PTW gets some tips and advice from the experts behind SFO's Harvey Milk Terminal 1.
Airport terminals are complex, energy-intensive buildings that are a vital part of transportation infrastructure. However, they can have a significant environmental impact, particularly in terms of their embodied carbon. This is the carbon emissions released during the lifecycle of building materials: from extraction and manufacturing through to transportation, construction and disposal.
With this in mind, San Fancisco International Airport (SFO) opted to design and build its new Harvey Milk Terminal 1 in a way that woudl reduce its environmental impact. Embodied carbon analysis was used throughout the design and construction process to help project managers make informed decisions about the building marterials used. This led to the team smashing its goal of achieving a 10% reduction in embodied carbon footprint from the baseline.
