Sofia Airport has taken a significant step toward sustainable aviation, positioning itself as a leader in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) usage in Europe.
In January 2025, the airport refuelled 11,369.62 tonnes of Jet A1 fuel blended with 2% SAF, with 1,894 aircraft using the sustainable fuel, accounting for 75% of all departing flights.
The successful certification of Sofia Airport’s SAF fuel farm in late 2024 allowed the airport to begin SAF refueling in January 2025. In its first month, the initiative has saved over 600 kilograms of carbon emissions, reinforcing Bulgaria’s commitment to sustainable air transport.
