Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) has unveiled an ambitious €9 billion ($9.8 billion) privately funded masterplan to transform Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO) into a premier European mega-hub. The long-term sustainable development initiative aims to nearly double the airport’s annual capacity to 100 million passengers by 2046.

The project will be entirely self-financed by ADR, requiring zero public funding. The capital expenditure is split between €5 billion for brand-new developments and €4 billion for upgrading existing infrastructure.

Key additions include a massive new terminal building equipped with two piers and 76 boarding gates, adding capacity for 35 million passengers. The plan also introduces a new eastern fourth runway...
