Chile unveils a 2025–2035 plan to triple Mataveri Airport’s terminal capacity in Rapa Nui, advancing a 9.000-sqm project while the longstanding land dispute with the Roe family remains part of the island’s infrastructure debate.

The Chilean government has unveiled plans to expand Mataveri International Airport (SCIP) in Rapa Nui with the construction of a new 9,000 square meter terminal, nearly tripling the size of the current facility. The project forms part of a broader 2025–2035 airport investment program and was presented during President Gabriel Boric’s visit to the island alongside Public Works Minister Jessica López.

The announcement comes within a sensitive territorial context, as the airport has historically been at the center of a decades-long land dispute involving the Roe family, whose ancestors claimed ownership of the land where Mataveri was built in the 1960s...
