Construction has begun on Pittsburgh International Airport’s new $1.4bn (£1.02bn) terminal, the first to be built from the ground-up in the USA since the pandemic.
The new 213,000m2 building will incorporate clean-air technology, offer more space for social distancing, and offer 27,000m2 of outdoor terrace space for travellers – both before and after security.
The terminal’s construction is also among the most sustainable in the industry, as the airport aims for a silver level or beyond certification from the USA’s Leader in Energy and Environmental Design.
Key design features, developed by architectural and engineering firms Gensler and HDR in association with Luis Vidal + Architects are centred on elements of nature and sustainability, leading-edge technology, and innovation in the community. The new facilities are scheduled to open in early 2025.
