The passenger terminal of the Gorno-Altaysk Airport will be expanded. The owners of the Gorno-Altaysk Airport—Sberbank and AFK Sistema—plan to invest more than RUB 300 million (USD 4 million) in the expansion of the existing terminal. This is necessary due to the continuously growing passenger traffic at the airport, in addition, this will allow the airport to receive international status in the future. In 2019, the passenger traffic exceeded 100,000 passengers for the first time. Even in 2020 new airlines were attracted and new routes opened, according to a press statement. At this time, no details on the expansion project or the project schedule are known.

Gorno-Altaysk Airport is the main gateway of the Altai Republic, located in Southern Siberia. After 20 years of inactivity, airport operations restarted in 2011 following renovation and runway lengthening. More than RUB 1 billion (USD 13.75) was invested in the reconstruction of the GornoAltaysk airport. The authorities of the Altai Republic have repeatedly called the airport an important tool for the development of tourism, which is one of the main sectors of the region's economy. More than 2 million tourists come to Altai annually. In 2019, the airport handled 102,338 passengers, ranking it number 82 on the list of busiest airports in Russia. #1147.20
