Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) saw almost 44 million passengers in FY2022-23. Naturally, the bulk of this was domestic traffic, which had an impressive recovery of 96%, contributing to the airport reaching 90% of pre-2019 levels.
During this time, Mumbai saw seven new international airlines starting operations from its premises and one domestic carrier, Akasa Air. Its domestic connectivity strengthened during the year, with the airport cornering more than 55% of non-metro traffic compared to 50% before the pandemic.
A breakdown of the passenger numbers reveals that 32.7 million of the total travelers out of Mumbai last year were on domestic flights, while 11.2 million were flying internationally. Compared to the previous year, domestic footfall increased by 87%, while international passenger numbers expanded by a massive 291%.
New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Goa were top domestic destinations, while Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and London were the favorites among international travelers.
