Melbourne Airport has reported "a new all-time September record" for overseas passenger numbers, with discussions now underway about a potential expansion of its international terminal.

Melbourne Airport is eyeing an expansion of its international terminal as record overseas travel has placed strain on some of its infrastructure.

The Tullamarine airport on Tuesday reported a 10 per cent rise in the number of international travellers passing through in September compared to the same month in 2023.

This year's monthly figure of 983,158 overseas passengers also marked a "new all-time September record" for the airport.

"The growth in international traveller numbers has been facilitated by new and increased flights and while that's fantastic, it has also placed pressure on some of our terminal infrastructure during peak times," Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus said.

"We are now in discussions with our airline partners about what an expansion of our international terminal footprint might look like, and the timeframes in which it could be delivered."
