Madrid's Barajas Airport will expand its passenger terminals at a cost of EUR 2.4 billion.

The megaproject involves enlargement of Terminal 4 and its satellite Terminal 4S (opened in 2006) and unification of the older terminals 1, 2, and 3, creating a centralized facility for check-in, security and passport control, as well as arrivals and baggage collection. The expansion will increase the airport’s capacity from 70 to 90 million annual passengers.

The strategic aim is to make the airport Europe's gateway to Latin America and improve connections to Asia. Construction is planned to start before 2026 with completion scheduled before 2031.

The airport also wants to develop into a logistics centre to support electronic commerce and air cargo. In order to support that, Barajas will develop an airport city with logistics areas, but also hotels and office development.
