The last module in the lining of Heathrow Airport’s 870m cargo tunnel under its runways is about to be installed by Mace under a £145M renewal project.
Despite being called a cargo tunnel, it is used by a wide variety of vehicles with many different purposes.
A Mace spokesperson told NCE: “When the tunnel was first built in the 1960s it was designed to link the Cargo Area to the Central Terminal Area (CTA), which was Terminal 1,2 & 3.
“In the 1980s Terminal 4 was built and instead of building a new tunnel dedicated to passenger transfers the airport decided to use the existing Cargo Tunnel.
“Currently there is a mixture of cargo, baggage, passengers, maintenance crews, emergency crews, catering and ancillary services using the tunnel.”
Sub-contractors on the project include Chisolm & Winch, Keltbray, Deane Roofing, Tone for scaffolding, DBI for traffic barriers, and LDD for firestopping.
