MAG Future Airspace team

The MAG Future Airspace team is pleased to provide an update on our once-in-a-generation programme to modernise our airspace and deliver quicker, quieter and cleaner journeys at East Midlands and Manchester Airports. The programme has been progressing through Stage 3 (Consult/Engage) of the Civil Aviation Authority’s airspace change process and we have now secured a gateway date, giving greater certainty on the programme timeline and the route through the remaining stages of the process.
This stage requires Manchester and East Midlands Airports to work closely with the other airports and organisations progressing airspace change proposals in our region:
· Liverpool John Lennon Airport
· Leeds Bradford Airport
· NATS EnRoute Ltd (NERL) (for airspace above 7,000ft)
Together, these organisations form a cluster for the purpose of airspace change and we must coordinate our public consultations, so they take place at the same time.
The CAA has set a Stage 3 Gateway Submission date of 16th April 2027 for our cluster. On this date we must submit documents and supporting materials to the CAA, setting out how we plan to deliver a comprehensive, fair and accessible consultation which takes account of the needs and preferences of a wide variety of stakeholders. The other change sponsors in our cluster will submit their documents and materials on the same date.
We expect to receive the CAA’s Gateway Decision in June 2027; and we are working towards a provisional window for public consultation from autumn 2027 – subject to CAA approval.
We will update our websites Future Airspace | Manchester Airport and Future Airspace | East Midlands Airport with further information about the consultation as it becomes available, and we will notify you of any key dates or information.
