Manchester Airport Group (MAG) is looking ahead to the first full year of “restriction-free” travel with confidence after a 140% year-on-year increase in passenger volumes in January.

It comes after the company announced a £440m development at Manchester Airport as the final phase of its £1.3bn transformation programme.

The group, which owns and operates Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands airports served 3.6 million passengers last month. That is up 140% on the same month in 2022 and represents a recovery to 91% of traffic seen pre-pandemic.

London Stansted led the rebound for MAG, with 1.8 million passengers, marking a 94% recovery against pre-pandemic traffic, while Manchester Airport served 1.6 million travellers, 90% of the number seen in 2019.

Recovery at East Midlands Airport was slightly slower, at 63% of pre-pandemic levels.
