The theme of our Q3 Lift Off event this year is ‘Energy Efficiency’. The event will be held at Heathrow headquarters in Hounslow on October 10th, 2024.
Energy efficiency is an important topic for us at Heathrow Airport given the scale of our operations. To put this into perspective, Heathrow’s annual electricity usage is equivalent to a London borough. We constantly challenge ourselves to be more efficient in using and managing energy.
As a key part of our Efficient Airport Programme, the Energy Demand Management (EDM) tranche aims at reducing carbon footprint and OPEX of the airport through greater energy efficiency and consequently lower energy costs. We are aiming for over 10% savings against our 2019 energy usage levels by 2032.
We envisage the EDM tranche can help identify areas where the quality of energy infrastructure for Team Heathrow can be improved. And consequently, it will enhance the passenger experience through the improvements it brings about such as improved lighting and ventilation. It will also allow us to establish and settle the benchmark asset standards and performance for energy efficiency.
We are looking for potential solutions for the two workstreams below:
- HVAC Upgrades:
- Upgrades to fans and/or motors within Air Handling Units, cooling towers and pumps.
- Upgrades to pressure sensors, temperature sensors and control valves etc. to be more energy efficient.
- Recommendations on how large chillers and existing boilers can be more energy efficient.
- Recommendations on how pipework circuitry for primary heating & cooling plant can be more energy efficient.
- Recommendations on how plant can be monitored and controlled for performance and energy usage.
- Recommendations on improved local temperature control.
- Metering & Data:
- New electricity, heat and water meters which could be installed, potentially reducing interruption to the power supply.
- How the existing metering data can be compiled and expanded for improved analysis to inform better efficiency.
Please note that specific technical information, exclusions and requirements will be provided at a later stage.
Potential solutions should be scalable and suitable for Heathrow Airport. Successful SMEs will have the opportunity to play a part in shaping our future landscape in Energy Demand Management through our Efficient Airport Programme.
