The feasibility study for a new USD 10 billion greenfield airport in Bahrain, being conducted by Netherlands Airport Consultants, is expected to be completed by the end of 2024 or early 2025. This new airport, planned for a reclaimed island north of the current facility, would replace Bahrain  International Airport (BAH), which is nearing its capacity limits.

BAH, designed to handle up to 14 million passengers annually, is projected to recover to pre-pandemic levels of 9.6 million travellers by the end of 2024. Despite recent upgrades, including a state-of-the-art terminal with a five-star Skytrax rating and advanced technologies such as single-token and self-service systems, the current airport is facing space constraints and limited opportunities for further expansion.

The new airport would require extensive dredging, infrastructure development, and a bridge or causeway to connect it to the mainland, with plans for comprehensive road and rail systems to ensure seamless access. As part of Bahrain’s national air connectivity plan, the new facility would help expand the airport’s reach to 100 destinations, enhancing connections to North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia and positioning Bahrain as a key player in global aviation. #1228.DEV40
