A Nottinghamshire General Aviation airport is likely to become the new home of a vehicle testing centre next year, with the runway to be used both for flying and car safety testing.

Gamston Airport, near Retford, is on course to be acquired by Thatcham Research later this year, with vehicle testing operations expected to start in spring 2022 alongside the airport’s existing flying operations.

Thatcham Research, the motor insurers’ research centre, said the proposed development would “allow us to increase the already significant contribution we make to vehicle and road safety and secure a sustainable future for aviation. Our investment will create a dual-purpose facility that North Nottinghamshire can be proud of, and it will also secure a future whereby aviation will continue to have a home at the site”
