For much of 2020, any talk of the global aviation sector was punctuated by a reference to the coronavirus pandemic. Declining passenger numbers, major airlines running into financial difficulties and significant aviation sector job losses have been at the top of the news agenda for months. 

But as the coronavirus vaccine rollout gathers momentum and many countries look towards the prospect of relaxing travel restrictions, airports are considering the challenges and opportunities the post-Covid world could offer. 

“Airports realised how vulnerable they were when passenger numbers dropped [due to Covid]. They now have a real challenge of optimising their current infrastructure and enhancing customer experience,” explains Royal HaskoningDHV business unit director aviation Esther Kromhout.
