Travelers worldwide have been restricted to carrying containers of liquids, gels, or aerosols less than 100 ml (3.4 ounces) ever since terrorists in the UK tried to smuggle liquid explosives onto aircraft through security in 2006. The attempt failed, but it was enough to impose these restrictions worldwide. The “3-1-1” rule was initially intended to be temporary but has persisted for nearly two decades.

In 2022, the UK began rolling out new scanners that promised to allow passengers to carry unlimited amounts of liquid, provided they are in containers of up to two liters (67.62 ounces). The new Computed Tomography (CT) security scanners can easily determine the composition of different liquids.

As a result, word spread across the pond to the US that similar changes may be coming. However, this is not true. According to Travel + Leisure, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has gone on record to state that the liquid law will remain at least until 2040.
