Dublin Airport operator DAA has been granted planning permission to construct a €200M (£171M) road tunnel under its crosswind runway despite Ryanair’s attempts to block the development.

The development is an approximately 1.1km new road with two lanes in either direction, around 0.7km of which will be enclosed.

It is described as a “critical airfield operational safety project” as it will allow airside vehicles to safely traverse the airfield. It will also allow aircraft to safely taxi on both northern and southern runways and reduce debris on the runway.

The tunnel will be a twin-cell enclosed tunnel 24m wide and 5.5m high from road surface to ceiling. It will be 17.5m below ground level and include a drainage sump.

It is expected to take three years to construct and will utilise a cut and cover technique. It will require the closure of the crosswind runway for circa six months, except for taxiing.
