Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) have revealed the design for the new Satellite Concourse 1 at Chicago O’Hare International Airport in Illinois – the first new building in the largest concourse area expansion and revitalization in the airport’s 68-year history. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) will design the concourse with Ross Barney Architects, Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects (JGMA) and Arup. As one of the first domestic-international codeshare concourses in Chicago, Satellite 1 has been designed to flexibly accommodate different aircraft bodies, increasing efficiency for carriers and layover passengers.
Derek A R Moore, design principal and airports practice leader at SOM, explained, “The main advantage the new satellite concourse will confer, along with the Global Terminal replacing the existing Terminal 2, will be to enable international arriving passengers to connect to domestic connecting flights from Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.” According to the architect, this development will be a boon to Chicago’s largest hub carriers, United and American, and their principal alliance partners. For Chicagoans, the expansion of airline networks means increased air service to more destinations.
Moore continued, “The technology deployed in the new concourse will enable the airlines and the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency to efficiently manage simultaneous operations of domestic flights and international arriving flights through a series of glazed corridors along the sides of the concourse. This system requires interlocking gate doors and doors within the perimeter corridors to maintain the required separation of those two traveler groups. The benefits will be greater use of gates, enabling the airlines and the airport to make greater use of less infrastructure.”
