It is time to renew your 2021 membership- Reminder! Since our email of 1st October 2020, we have had chance to review the initial results of the member survey – which provide an overwhelming endorsement of the work BAG has been doing over the last year, and include many helpful suggestions for further development of our programme for the year ahead. The survey has been extended so if you have any comments that you would like to add, these would be greatly valued. The output of the survey was a key consideration at our BAG Board Strategy Workshop which was held yesterday, with participation from key Strategic Airport Partners and from the Department for International Trade (DIT). A range of topics were discussed – considering our response both to the near term survival of the industry and its longer term recovery. We will be consolidating the threads over the next few weeks to develop a full plan for agreement at the December BAG Board meeting. In advance of this I wanted to use this opportunity to share some key themes for next year:
- Commonality of message: working with other industry stakeholders to reinforce the importance of the aviation sector to the UK business and society, and in particular the role and impact of the aviation supply chain.
- Strategic relationships: continuing to support UK airports through the crisis, as they develop new operating models and restructure their businesses
- Technology & Innovation: promoting innovation from across the supply chain in both UK and export markets, helping our customers survive and then rebuild in a safe & secure, resilient and cost-effective manner
- Priority markets: continuing to work with Government to understand and support access to export opportunities for UK suppliers that can help sustain our businesses in both short- and longer-term
- Sustainability: showing global leadership, in partnership with others across the sector, to develop a more sustainable aviation sector, and in parallel to maximise opportunities for UK supply chain.
- Aviation Community, People and Skills: helping provide a focus for the aviation community that supports retention of skills and development of the diverse and inclusive future aviation workforce needed for recovery.
I would welcome your feedback on these topics to ensure that we continue to provide great value to your business in the coming year. Building on the successful transition to an on-line and enhanced programme of activities in 2020, our plan for 2021 will adopt a hybrid of on-line and face to face meetings as regulation and good practice allow. I do hope that you and your team have been able to benefit from the on-line programme over the past few months – examples of which member are listed in detail in the BAG Annual Report, as well as the BAG Chair Update. I would also like to provide some additional context around the Membership Fees for 2021. The BAG Board is very conscious of market conditions, and has been looking hard at future budget scenarios and subscription levels. Whilst actively increasing our activities over the course of this year, and committing to maintain a full programme in 2021, we recognise the need to focus on own costs, and ability to draw upon surplus from better years. We have therefore as a Board agreed to hold membership subscription rates at the same level as the previous year. The success of BAG is of course primarily down to the strength of the membership. I am hoping we can continue to build upon this to help secure the future of the sector, and am looking forward to your renewal with BAG for 2021!
Graham Bolton, BAG Chair Please update your BAG subscription details by 23 November 2020.
BAG Annual Survey 2020- Extended deadline 2 November 2020 The initial results from the members’ survey have been really helpful in informing our planning for 2021 – so thanks to those who have already completed it. These results also provide an evidence base on the challenges facing the industry that we can share with government, both directly through DIT and DfT, and in our wider industry messaging. We heard at our members’ briefing on Thursday from Seema Malhotra MP, representing the All Party Parliamentary Group on the Future of Aviation, how helpful it is to have tangible examples of the challenges being faced by industry. The more data we have, the stronger the messaging that we are able to send on the needs and priorities of members. We have therefore extended this year’s deadline to make sure we gather feedback from as broad a cross section of the membership as possible. The survey should take no more than 10 minutes. The structure of the survey falls into three short sections:
- COVID-19 Impact
- Brexit Impact
- Industry Priorities for 2021
Should you feel that there is additional information that you would wish to share or particular metrics that would help to promote your sector(s) then please let us know. The survey will be undertaken by ADS/BAG staff, ensuring that the information you provide is handled in strict confidence. ADS has experience in confidential membership sector surveys such as the aerospace sector and security sector annual surveys. No BAG member (including myself or other members of the Board) will have access to individual responses. The outputs will not provide gap analysis or other such data that could provide marketing advantages for individual BAG members. Thank you in advance for your support in completing this survey – which is more important than ever in ensuring a robust plan for the year ahead. If you have any wider feedback, then you are of course welcome to contact me or the BAG secretariat directly at any time.
The survey can be accessed here Graham Bolton BAG Chair
BAG Business Intelligence Update - Updated version now available! At the BAG Board meeting on 25 March 2020 it was agreed for BAG to reassess its priorities due to COVID-19 and based on the new priorities, the Business Intelligence and Strategic Relationship Working Groups were asked by the BAG Board to try and collect as much intelligence as they can to gather on what is happening in the market, both now and how things change as we pass the peak of the current crisis and restrictions start to lift. The Board agreed to focus these discussions onto the following topics:
- What’s happening with the Airlines, how are they responding to their very significant challenges
- What’s happening at UK airports. We are hearing of capital plans being put back. When might some of those come back, in what form etc.
- What’s happening in the International markets, particularly in the priority markets we set for this year in discussion with DIT. Based on what we learn should we be resetting those priorities or focusing on other opportunities
BAG has already issued six editions of this pack. Please find the latest Business Intelligence Pack here.
FTE APEX Virtual Expo 2020 - would you be interested to join a BAG Member Stand BAG has been in conversation with the organisers of FTE APEX Virtual Expo 2020 - The air transport industry’s first major digital trade show and is considering organising a BAG Member Stand at the event which is scheduled virtually from 8-9 December 2020.
