New Civil Engineer - Belinda Smart

Atkins has collaborated with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on a “digital toolkit” that estimates the embodied carbon associated with airport construction.

There are tools available in the market to measure carbon in buildings, however the newly launched solution, comprising three data-based tools, is specific to aviation. It is also designed to be applied at the earliest possible stage of design.

Andy Yates, technical director aviation infrastructure for Atkins, told NCE the software will calculate carbon emissions associated with the construction of terminal buildings and aviation infrastructure. The aim is to benchmark embodied carbon for terminal buildings, runways and multi-storey car parks and the data collected will allow airport developers to work with operators on reducing it.

Atkins – along with parent company SNC-Lavalin Group - has expertise in the design and certification of airport infrastructure and in decarbonising construction. In 2022 it launched Decarbonomics, which provides airports with a data-based tool to benchmark and deliver decarbonisation roadmaps.
