The idea of relaunching the airport as a cargo hub has faced, but overcome, a degree of local resistance.
The denial of a judicial review into Manston Airport's proposed reopening brings an end to a story that began last September. After the UK granted approval for development work on the site that would see the airport reopen in an operational capacity, Jenny Dawes, a local resident from nearby Ramsgate, applied for a review.
This was the second time that such an application had been made. The first one, in 2020, saw Dawes receive financial backing from the Ramsgate Town Council, and resulted in the quashing of an initial development approval that had been granted in July of that year. For her second attempt, her campaign was crowdfunded.
According to The Isle of Thanet News, Dawes argued that "irreparable harm to the people, environment and the economy of East Kent" would arise as a result of the airport's proposed development. However, as Kent Online reported yesterday, a High Court judge has rejected a judicial review into the plans, meaning they can proceed.
