Momberger Airport Information

29 April 2024

Nico Bezuidenhout, the chief executive of Aurigny, has expressed support for extending the runway at Alderney Airport, stating it makes "financial sense" for the airline and the island.

However, he has voiced frustration over the delays in the planning process, which are affecting the cost implications of the project.

The States of Guernsey initially backed a GBP 24 million (USD 29 million) proposal in 2022 to extend the runway to at least 1,050 meters to accommodate larger aircraft, and a planning application for the runway, along with a new passenger terminal and fire station, was published in late 2023.

Despite the perceived benefits, the plans have caused a split among politicians. Some deputies in Guernsey have opposed continuing the work. At the same time, politicians in Alderney are concerned about the project's future after the election of Lyndon Trott, a critic of the extension, as President of the Policy and Resources Committee. The discussion around extending Guernsey's runway remains ongoing, with a report on the options published in 2020. #1216.3
