A first hurdle was cleared for the construction of Kulim International Airport (KXP) when the government approved the proposed project at the National Physical Planning Council (NPPC) meeting in late October 2020. Kulim Airport is a proposed airport construction project for the Malaysian city of Kulim, located in Kedah State and bordering Penang State. The state government intends to build the new airport due to growing capacity restraints at Kulim's nearest international airport, Penang. Kulim International Airport will mostly focus on cargo, whereas Penang International Airport is more focused on passenger traffic. The state government has allocated 600 hectares of land for the new project. The proposal will now be further studied in the National Airport Strategy Plan (NASP), which is expected to be finalized 2023. The approval is subject to further consideration by the Transport Ministry and other government agencies, including the Finance and Home Affairs Ministries, the Department of Environment, the Royal Malaysian Air Force and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), among others. #1134.14
