The COVID-19 pandemic has knocked Heathrow a long way from the top spot.

For years, Britain's busiest airport has also been Europe's busiest airport. However, London Heathrow was knocked from the top spot to number five in 2020 following the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, thanks to strict border controls implemented by the UK government for much of 2021, the airport has fallen even further to eighth place (It's also the only airport in the top 30 that saw passenger numbers fall year on year).

Which airports have beaten it to the top five spots? We turned to our friend Jakob Wert at aeroTELEGRAPH who crunched the numbers.

Just beating Frankfurt to the fifth spot, and rising three places from 2020's ranking is Moscow's Domodedovo Airport...
