Australians have been enthusiastic investors in British airports over the years.

The Future Fund has owned 17 per cent of Gatwick Airport since 2010 and also has a stake in Edinburgh Airport. The Queensland government's QSuper is also an Edinburgh Airport investor. Macquarie bought into the Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton airports in 2014, alongside Spanish construction and infrastructure giant Ferrovial.

In 2012 IFM Investors, which is in the midst of selling troubled energy group Pacific Hydro, bought a third of Manchester Airports Group, which owns the Manchester, Stansted, East Midlands and Bournemouth airports. And if that's not enough, AMP Capital owns 49 per cent of Newcastle International Airport.

So it should come as surprise to nobody that a number of Australian investors have been linked to the potential sale of London City Airport.
