Greece is moving forward with its largest airport expansion in history as the Athens Airport Expansion Project advances to prepare the country’s main international gateway for 40 million passengers annually by 2032.

The €1.3 billion programme aims to enhance terminal capacity, improve passenger experience, and support Greece’s tourism-driven economy. The project is being delivered in partnership with government authorities and airport operators as part of a broader infrastructure strategy to modernise transport hubs ahead of forecasted increases in global travel demand, particularly from Europe, the Middle East, and North America.

The expansion encompasses a series of major upgrades to the airport’s facilities, tailored to deliver increased capacity and improved operational efficiency:

  • Enlargement and refurbishment of existing terminal buildings
  • New departure and arrival halls designed to reduce congestion
  • Enhanced security screening areas to support faster passenger flow
  • Expanded baggage handling and logistics systems
  • Retail, hospitality, and passenger amenity upgrades
  • Improved transport links connecting the airport to Athens city centre and wider regions
