Dublin Airport officially opened its solar farm on Monday as it commits to 20 per cent of the airport’s annual electricity needs coming from renewable solar energy by 2030.

Some 15,000 solar panels have been installed on the 28-acre site, which is located close to the south runway and visible from the R102. Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien officially opened the farm, saying Ireland has an aviation sector that “is respected and admired internationally” and the government is committed to continuing to improve its infrastructure.

He added: “Investing in renewable solar energy and exploring the potential of geothermal sets Dublin Airport up for the future and helps the airport meet its commitment to reducing its emissions by 51 per cent by 2030. I’m delighted to be here with the daa on this really impressive solar farm just short of 30 acres and 15,000 solar panels.

"This on an average year will provide between 10 and 13 per cent of the electricity required to run Dublin Airport.”
