The PGK 7 million in the 2019 Budget allocated for the Regional Airport Programme will complement the Civil Aviation Development Investment Programme (Cadip), National Planning Minister Richard Maru said during the contract-signing ceremony in Port Moresby recently for upgrading of five airports in the country by the National Airports Corporation (NAC) and contractors. “The Government is focused on the next level of airport development in the country,” he said. “In the national budget, we provided PGK 7 million for the start of the Regional Airport Programme. This is the Tier 2 now, so in terms of planning, we are really focused on the next level of airport redevelopment.” The allocation is for the upgrade of airports to international safety and security standards, including Civil Aviation Safety Authority (Casa) certification and upgrade, rehabilitation and extension of all major airports to cater for bigger aircraft. Deputy Prime Minister Charles Abel said Cadip and now the Regional Airport Programme were signs of investments in this vital sector. “I am here to support the modality of the Cadip programme because it signifies that our Government continues to make important investments throughout the country. Our Government is coming up with engagement with our partners to deliver programmes like this that benefit our people throughout the country and not just in Port Moresby.” The Cadip programme will end in 2019. “I want to thank Asian Development Bank for this multi-tranche financing facility at concessional rates,” Abel said.” That gives us certainty over a period of time.” #1086.4
