Pascall+Watson’s concept design for the new £130m Arrivals Terminal for Stansted Airport has been submitted for planning approval.
As part of Manchester Airports Group’s (M.A.G, owners of Stansted Airport), multi-million pound transformation programme, the completed design will enable a projected capacity of 35 million passengers per annum. The airport is currently the fastest growing and busiest single terminal airport in the UK with over 180 destinations served by 18 airlines.
Located adjacent to the current terminal, the proposed 34,000m2 scheme relocates all arrivals functions from the existing terminal in to a new state-of-the art facility. The existing building will be reconfigured to service a dedicated departures operation. The planning submission includes an external forecourt, a generous arrivals concourse, onward travel facilities, baggage reclaim and immigration facilities.
As with the original terminal, the design focuses on a modular sky-lit roof with double height spaces. The soffit design reflects the single directional nature of the facility, and combined with its functional planning within a single volume, encourages intuitive movement through all the arrivals functions.
The arrivals building was designed as standalone rather than as an extension to the original terminal in response to operational, logistical and sustainability briefing requirements.
