Pascall+Watson collaborated with Zaha Hadid to develop the functional planning of Beijing’s new Daxing International Airport, the world’s largest single-building airport terminal.

Following a rigorous analysis and benchmarking process during the concept design stage, we concluded that a radial plan arrangement would be the most advantageous in terms of layout efficiency.

Our solution dramatically reduces passenger travel distances when compared against more linear terminals and enables a huge degree of operational flexibility.

Opened this month, the airport covers an area of over 1.4million square metres and will be able to handle 45 million passengers by 2021, with plans for 72 million by 2025 and 100 million by 2040.

The greatly anticipated mega-airport provides China with a national symbol of global significance.
